Counseling for the Well being of Man kind – A Malaysian Experience
By: Prof. Emeritus Dato' Dr. Abd. Halim Othman
“ Counseling for the well being of mankind is an attempt to look at the counseling service from the historical perspectives leading towards the development to the present situation, where with rapid social development and progress, our well being is somewhat affected, as reflected by a host of social problems”.
After the introduction of counseling and guidance for more than three decades there is now an increasing awareness that the service becomes more systematically and orderly through the appointment of fulltime counselors. This development is in keeping with current needs and demands. The problem now arises because the training of counselors is yet inadequate to qualify them as professionals needed for the service entrusted upon them.
Apart from upgrading training programs, professional counseling must also focus on research, publications and commitment to a high standard of ethics and practice.
The counseling service has the potential to be a professional service in Malaysia, with the necessary support and infrastructure available and in the foreseeable future, specialized service will emerge in order to deal with varied and complex problems confronting humanity. Through such developments, counseling in Malaysia will be more prepared to enhance the wellbeing of mankind.
